The 2019 Devon Freewheelers 10th Anniversary Ride Out, took place on Sunday the 9th of June. Devon Freewheelers volunteers arrived at the Haldon Grill on Telegraph Hill just outside of Exeter at 08:30 for a hearty pre-ride breakfast, and to set up the registration point. From 09:00, bikes started to arrive....and kept on coming! A total of 73 bikes and 17 pillion passengers registered to take part in the ride out, along with 12 Devon Freewheelers volunteers acting as Pilot, Marshall's and Sweeper, and the Event Medical Team bringing up the rear.
10.00 am and the marshall's left to man their stations on the first leg of the ride out, 10:15 and the call to get ready to leave was given, gloves and jackets on, pillion passengers in position and engines revving.....10:20 and the Pilot gave the signal to leave! The first leg saw the convoy of bikes following a route through, Bovey Tracey, Mortenhampstead, Post Bridge and arriving at the South Devon Railway in Buckfastleigh just before noon. Once dismounted, the riders, pillions and marshall's enjoyed the refreshments on offer.......quite a few Cornish pasties were eaten!
13:00 and the marshall's, set off for their second leg positions and shortly after that everyone taking part started to roll out. The second leg of the ride out followed a route down through Totnes, Kingsbridge, Yealmpton, and arrived at the Brook Inn in Plympton just before 14:30, where everyone enjoyed a BBQ in glorious sunshine, along with entertainment provided by Geoff Blake-Lobb.
What a fantastic day it was, with great feedback from those who had taken part and definitely lots of smiles on faces! Photo's from the Ride Out are available to be viewed by clicking here. JS photography has very kindly given permission for Devon Freewheelers to use the photographs to raise more funds. If you would like to have a copy of your photograph (for a donation to the charity), please email firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
The ride out raised just under £800 for Devon Freewheelers, which will enable the charity to carry on providing the free Blood Bike service to the NHS across Devon, 365 days a year, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
Devon Freewheelers would like to thank everyone at the Haldon Grill, South Devon Railway, The Brook Inn, everyone who took part in the ride out and all of the volunteers who gave their time to help with the planning, recce rides, marshalling, registration, medical cover and the BBQ , for making it such a successful and enjoyable day.
