Devon Freewheelers - Who we serve and the jobs we do!

Submitted on

Since 2009 when Devon Freewheelers first became a charity until the present day, the NHS, residents and visitors in Devon has benefited from the FREE Blood Bike service that Devon Freewheelers and its gold award winning volunteers has provided, and will continue to provide. The charity receives NO payment for the Blood Bike service, from either the NHS or the Government...and we rely on donations from the general public and our supporters, plus our volunteers commitment to attending fundraising events to enable us to continue to provide the service.

We serve the following...
4 x main hospitals in Exeter, Plymouth, Barnstaple and Torbay.
28 x Community or Cottage Hospitals.
1 x main renal unit in Exeter and 5 regional renal units.
1 x Military Unit.
4 Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
3 Regional Maternity Units.
1 x Milk Hub.

Jobs carried out by the Blood Bikes includes....
Collection and delivery of blood and other medical samples between NHS establishments.
Collections of blood samples from home dialysis patients across the county.
Delivery of medication or patient notes to patients who have been discharged from hospital, either at home or in nursing or care homes, and between NHS establishments.
Delivery to NHS establishments or patients at home, of medical equipment.
Delivery of donor breast milk to Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
Collections of donor breast milk from mums at home and deliver them to the Milk Banks.
Collection of samples form Community Nurses working within local communities.

Other work that the charity also carries out for FREE includes:
Delivery of Blood Products to the Devon Air Ambulance.
Delivery of whole blood to the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance every 48 hours, and in between if the blood gets used.
Monthly scheduled deliveries of donor breast milk to Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
Collection & delivery of patient medication for Hospiscare.

Our volunteers give hundreds of hours and travel thousands of miles every year to provide the Blood Bike service to the NHS across Devon and beyond if required, and each and every volunteer is proud of the role they play in helping the people they serve.

Devon Freewheelers is a registered member of the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes (NABB).
