Most people don’t realise what happens behind the scenes in healthcare.

When hospitals urgently need blood, samples, medication, or donor milk moved between sites — especially out of hours — someone has to get it there.

Fast. Safely. Reliably.

That’s where blood bikes come in.

And chances are, you’ve seen one without even knowing what it was doing.

What Do Blood Bikes Actually Do?

At Devon Freewheelers, volunteers provide a completely free courier service to the NHS.

That means:

  • Transporting blood and urgent medical supplies
  • Supporting hospitals, air ambulances, and healthcare teams
  • Covering evenings, nights, weekends — when other services aren’t available

No drama. No fuss. Just getting the job done when it matters most.

Why People Volunteer

No one is doing this for recognition.

They do it because:

  • It’s meaningful
  • It directly supports patient care
  • It fits around real life
  • It’s a strong, supportive community

There’s something powerful about knowing you’ve helped — even if you never meet the person at the other end.

Supporting Critical Services

Devon Freewheelers supports:

  • Devon Air Ambulance
  • Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance

Every run, every mile, every volunteer hour contributes to something bigger.
